Student class project

Bacteria and Fungi form symbiotic relationships with soil organisms and are necessary for thorough rehabilitation of a mine site (Australian Government, 2016, p. 39). “Symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi are important microbial groups intimately involved in plant establishment on soils”, yet in an Australian Government report (2006), it was found that, though essential to the rehabilitation process, microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi were not directly referred to in the process (Wildman, 2017, p. 2).

Year 10 students will use transects and quadrats to make a bacterial profile of the Gaskell rehabilitation site.
