Partnerships

Partnerships are key to success of modern restoration concepts. Cooperation with the stakeholders, such as licensing authorities, the general public and nature conservation groups, builds awareness for opportunities to enhance biodiversity at mining sites.

In addition to numerous partnerships Heidelberg Materials subsidiaries have built on local/national levels, Heidelberg Materials started a European partnership with BirdLife International in 2011. In 2014, this partnership was extended to Africa and Asia. One of our key project has been to jointly evaluated the proximity of all our quarries in Europe, in Asia and in Africa with area of high biodiversity value. Thanks to this exercise we have been able to better assess our impacts and to prioritize our response actions.

Since 2012, more than 40 joint cooperation projects and partnerships have been signed with national BirdLife Partners along with several other agreements with universities and environmental NGOs.

Biodiversity in Good Company

Heidelberg Materials has been a member of Biodiversity in Good Company since 2008. This initiative, launched during the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CoP 9), aimed to intensify the engagement of the private sector by encouraging companies to incorporate the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into their management systems and share their best practices.

The publication of an internal guideline of the implementation of Biodiversity management at Heidelberg Materials followed this signature in 2009, leading the path for other companies of our sector. Since then, many projects aiming at implementing consistent biodiversity management practices, meaningful indicators and action plans have been implemented by our operating units.

These actions and partnerships will continue to grow worldwide, so that Heidelberg Materials can actually bring its stone to the fight against the ongoing loss of biodiversity and lead the sector in biodiversity management.
